Abstract

Denied by the official Soviet pedagogy, deprived of the opportunity to voice his ideas in his homeland, Konstantin Ventsel (1857-1947) was an author banned in Soviet Russia, but his works found a warm reception among like-minded members of the left-wing intelligentsia in Bulgaria in the first decades of the 20th century. The pedagogy of anarchism and the theory of free education had a number of supporters, such as students, teachers and university professors.
Educator Konstantin Ventzel widely proclaimed his views on the autonomy of schools and their separation from the state. His main ideas were:
- complete freedom of the child's personality;
- non-intervention of the State and its bureaucratic structures in child character formation and education;
- giving children all-round education as an opportunity for their integration in a new "free and enforcement-free society".
The subject of the present study is K. Ventsel’s major pedagogical works whose translations were published between 1896 and 1929. The purpose of the study is to reveal the dynamics of the reception of these translations in Bulgaria as influenced by his personality and views. The following tasks have been carried out:
- specifying the translated works, their year of publication; the cities where they were released;
- specifying the names of the translators (M. Katranova, N. Chukalova, V. Chalkov, I. Koyumdzhiev, T. Buchinski) and their motives for translation;
- giving a present-day assessment of his ideas on education.
It is logical to conclude that Konstantin Ventsel’s works found a favorable reception among readers with anarcho-liberal views, who saw in them a means of promoting their ideas among the younger generation in Bulgaria in the first decades of the 20th century.
