Socialist realism was declared as an ideology of culture in the international workers movement in the USSR at the Harkov congress in 1930. In the Yugoslav region it caused different reactions: on one side it was accepted, while on the other one it was rejected as both theoretically and practically unsustainable. When it was accepted and further developed by the state and party apparatus in 1945, it became dominant artistic movement. Thematics based on propagation of political ideas is versatile, which can be observed from the posters createdwith regard to celebrations of the world and national state holidays such as May Day, Women`s Day, Yugoslav Army Day and Youth Day. In addition, posters for numerous sports, art, theatre, music and agriculture events were also created. They were ideologically influenced by the Rusian avant-garde. Inspiration for the choice of artistic forms is found in urban painting of home artists and European art movements which proclaimed unity of content and form. Illustration is naive, whileabstract composition is skillfully achieved in terms of craft and technique. Optimism, rapidity, strength of machine and man are expressed by the diagonal dynamics. In this spirit, the posters for the representative exhibition Painting and Sculpture of Yugoslav people in XIX and XX century in 1946 and exhibition of Association of Serbian painters held in 1949 were created. As a theoretical and politicalfallacy,socialist realism was rejected in 1950 when a new approach to art and the world was proposed. The first true polemics with social realism was a text in the catalogue for the exhibition of Mica Popovic in 1950, while a new artistic expression was announcedby Petar Lubarda with his exhibition in Belgrade in 1951.
