CONNECTION BETWEEN PRE-EXAM ANXIOSITY WITH LOCUS CONTROL AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS OF STUDENTS

Abstract

Pre-exam anxiety is most often defined as an emotional state that a person experiences during examinations, and consists of feelings of tension, fear, anxiety, and anxiety, which are associated with the physiological excitement resulting from the activation of the autonomic nervous system. This paper presents the results of the research whose problem was to examine whether students differ in the level of anxiety expressed in two times - in a neutral situation and immediately before the exam. Also, the relationship between pre-exam anxiety levels and the control locus, as well as the subjective and objective achievement of students, was examined. The sample of the research consisted of 50 students of the first, second and third year of psychology. The survey used a questionnaire for the collection of socio-demographic data, Beck's inventory of anxiety and Scale of externality. The results of the study show that the level of anxiety among students has changed between two periods. Also, among students of different years of study, significant differences were found in the level of pre-exam anxiety. In addition, in comparison with students of the second and third year, students of the first year showed more pronounced symptoms of anxiety. A positive correlation between pre-exam anxiety and external control locus has been established, and higher levels of anxiety are accompanied by high levels of externality. The results of the research also indicate that there is no connection between the pre-exam anxiety and the measures of the subjective and objective achievement of the students.
