Abstract

According to the differentiation, affirmed in the songs of Schubert and Schumann a long time ago, vocal works are divided provisionally into two types: in the first one the music generally delivers the character of the lyrics and has the leading role in the artistic unit, while in the second type the music follows more or less accurately the separate notional elements of the words.
Definitely LyubomirPipkov’s song for mixed choir “Early corn” is closer to the type of synthesis characteristic of Schumann’s songs: the lyrics have a clearly expressed leading and structure-defining role in creating the artistic unit. By following in details the procedure of development in the piece, we pay attention both to the coincidence between the particular musical phrases and the syntactic articulation of the lyrics, and the discordance between them which leads to particularly powerful aesthetic results. In some cases Pipkov deliberately divides syntagmas in the musical realization of the poem which enables various interpretations of the words and helps the many directions and layers of perception.
The high artistic value of this particularly suggestive piece is owed largely to the typical Pipkov’s way of making the poetry musical: “Early corn” is a representative example of the specific approach in the composer’s vocal works to reaching a synthesis between words and music
