Abstract

The initiation of hemodialysis treatment represents a significant change in the lives of patients. This type of treatment poses problems of various kinds, for the solution of which the application of a complex of care is important. Are included here: introducing patients to the new regime and lifestyle; nutrition according to the specifics of terminal kidney disease; care for vascular access and prevention of complications; maintaining social contacts and physical activity. In order to improve their quality of life, they need to be well enough acquainted with the method of treatment and the rules of life that they must follow. Adherence to a regimen and lifestyle with kidney disease is a challenge for every hemodialysis patient. With each procedure they learn to experience their illness. During the dialysis sessions, patients receive moral and psychological support from each staff member. The aim of the present study is to investigate to what extent the acquired knowledge about life with hemodialysis improves the life of patients. The activities, events and care provided to patients aim to achieve a high degree of satisfaction with the procedure, the way of life and maintaining the quality of life. For the purpose of the study, a survey was conducted among hemodialysis patients to collect, summarize and analyze the necessary information. The following were used: documentary method for research of medical documentation and normative documents; graphical method for visualizing the results; statistical methods for processing and analysis of research results. The participation is voluntary and patients who wished to express their opinion took part. The study found that the information that patients receive in the dialysis ward is sufficient (97.6%) and useful (98.2%). The questions that arose in the patients were asked to a doctor or nurse and received a satisfactory answer (99.6). Patients are satisfied with the care they receive (100%). They give a positive assessment of the knowledge they have received and say that it helps them cope in everyday life. At the beginning of dialysis treatment, and then in the subsequent procedures, patients need the supporting role of doctors and nurses, their attention and care to adapt more easily to their new condition. During this adaptation period, they receive information and guidance on new life with hemodialysis treatment. The study shows that as a result of the training activities and the knowledge gained, patients value their quality of life. Knowledge is a force that reveals the potential of hemodialysis for a full life. It is a means to an end - to improve the lives of people with end-stage renal disease. Specialized knowledge is the key to a better life.
