Abstract

The concept of a green economy is an approach to achieving the goals of sustainable development of modern society. It is defined as an economy that leads to the improvement of human well-being and social equality, while significantly reducing the risks to the environment and the lack of resources. Many of the European Union's policies are related to promoting the idea of a green and resource-efficient economy, respecting the principles of the green economy. The green economy is perceived as a universal approach that has an impact on the long-term development of national economies and helps to solve a number of problems related to the economy, public welfare and environmental protection. The purpose of this report is to analyze the state of the green economy in Bulgaria. The comparison of the country's results with those of the leader in the ranking of the Green Growth Index on the individual indicators included in it, reveals the areas in which Bulgaria must make efforts to overcome the gap. The results can serve as guidelines for the future development of the country and a more successful transition to a green economy.
