Abstract

Hyperbaric therapy is a specialized treatment involving breathing pure oxygen under high pressure which is performed in a controlled environment - specially designed hyperbaric chambers This works against hypoxia - alveolar oxygen saturation increases which in turn leads to oxygen level increase in the plasma and tissues. Hyperbaric treatments are not age restricted. It can be applied successfully to children with developmental problems. Many children with autism have certain physiological abnormalities that the therapy can improve significantly. Positive changes in physiology and/or behavior are observed after hyperbaric therapy. Several studies reported that the therapy improves brain perfusion, reduces inflammation markers and does not worsen oxidative stress markers in children with autism. Moreover, many of these studies notice behavioral changes and report improvements in several behavioral areas. The pressure in the hyperbaric chamber reduces the inflammation that restricts blood flow to areas of the children's brain, which areas control speech and social interactions. The hyperbaric therapy is a treatment that is complementary to the therapy of children with developmental problems. Purpose: Study the awareness of parents of children with disabilities about hyperbaric therapy and the role of the nurse in educating parents on the proper application of the therapy. Methodologies: A survey was conducted via an online questionnaire in the period from September 2021 to January 2022 with parents from all over the country. 102 persons were randomly selected and participated voluntarily. The questionnaire was designed specifically for the purpose of this study. The following were used: documentary and sociological method - direct survey and statistical method for analyzing and presenting the results. Results and conclusions: The analysis of the results shows that there is insufficient awareness for the preliminary examinations that are necessary before starting hyperbaric therapy and its proper course. The analysis also shows that if the parents are properly informed by a hyperbaric specialist (and not by a randomly selected source on the internet), the therapy gives better results even with a smaller amount of procedures.
