Abstract

Introduction: Over the past decades, climate change has led to an increase in the frequency and scale of disasters, including floods. The problems related to floods are global – victims and casualties, disruption of people's daily life, affecting urban areas, agricultural land, forests, and negative impact on public health. The need for knowledge in this area is increasing with the pace of global climate change. The aim of this study is to trace the trend in the number of floods in recent decades due to evolving climate change. Material and methods: A complex approach was used: documentary method for processing and analysis of information from international scientific sources on the topics: "global flood trend", "flood risk areas" and "international water policy", descriptive and comparative methods. Results and discussion: The study shows that in recent years, because of cataclysms in weather conditions, the number of floods has increased and increasing climate change is beginning to be considered a risk factor for the life and health of people of increasing importance. An overview of the measures for protection of the population, which are necessary to follow the trends for increasing the risk of flood disaster. Conclusions: Increasing climate change and the fact that more people today live in areas at risk of floods raises the need for sustainable use and management of natural resources. This could be achieved through the development of flood risk reduction activities, including structural measures, integrated management, and international water policy. Climate change policies need to be changed to reduce damage and losses to society. There is a need to develop national and international policies to assess the vulnerability of regions to climate change.
