Abstract

The given article presents one possibility for the implementation of a STEM center in a school. Basic
possibilities for financial and methodical support of the work of the center have been determined. A connection was
made between the possibilities of the competence approach in all educational levels and the technological base of
the STEM-center. Several examples of educational content realized by teachers from SU "Sava Dobroplodni" city of
Shumen are provided.
The realization of the STEM-center is based on the framework laid down in a number of normative documents of
the Bulgarian education system. According to the Strategic Framework for the Development of Education, Training
and Learning in the Republic of Bulgaria (2021-2030) "After the entry into force of the Preschool and School
Education Act in 2016, commitment was achieved in the development and implementation of national education
policies. The EPA provided normative prerequisites for the overall implementation of the policies".
The role of the educational institution, regardless of whether it is a kindergarten, school or university, is becoming
extremely important. The whiteboard and the marker have long ceased to be the attributes of the teacher. They give
way to electronic resources and interactive methods for learning the learning material. The classroom is not the only
learning space. Learning lessons in nature or in a scholarly environment such as a library or university heightens
students' interest. More than ever, it is necessary for the teacher to be creative, adaptable to the dynamically
changing learning environment and, last but not least, to present the volume of learning material in an
understandable way. These are the three bridges that connect the teacher and the student. Simply because the time is
different – dynamic and full of challenges.
The formation of key competences is a continuous process that starts from the first crossing of the school threshold
and goes through the ability to make sense of the volume of learning material and the ability and desire for selfstudy.
In school, we know that students learn more willingly when the learning material is "translated" by teachers
to meet student interests and pursuits. Knowledge gains its meaning when it is put into practice and its significance
is "seen" not only in the form of evaluation or encouragement.
The STEM-approach provides exceptional opportunities to combine competences from different fields of knowledge
into a powerful tool for tackling tasks. Confidence in one's abilities and the perceived need for knowledge is a
guarantee for building successful individuals capable of improving the world in which we live.
