Abstract

According to the Medical Standard of Surgery, health care professionals perform general medical and specific activities according to the specifics of the clinic / ward in which they work, supporting the doctor's activities and performing the manipulations assigned by him independently or under his control, according to their competence. The training of students in the specialty "nurse" in surgical care is aimed at acquiring knowledge and skills to monitor the general condition of the patient and to perform special care in the preoperative and postoperative period. From particular importance is also the development of decision-making competencies in emergencies in surgery, as well as the timely detection of complications that can endanger the patient's life. The aim of the present study is to identify student' training needs for surgical care. A survey was conducted of 120 students majoring in "nursing" who are studying at the  Faculty of Public Health of MU-Sofia. The results show the need to introduce modern methods and tools to provide conditions for the acquisition of knowledge and skills needed to perform quality surgical care. Emphasis needs to be placed on the development of professional behavior of students as a condition for the formation of professional competencies. In training in surgical care, students must acquire knowledge and skills for clinical observation of patients with surgical diseases. It is also important to provide students with the opportunity to gain confidence in manipulative skills, dressing techniques and dealing with emergencies in surgery. The good organization of the clinical practice and the undergraduate internship is a guarantee for the active participation of the students in the real practice of the surgical wards. Students need qualified mentors to actively participate in their practical training. The development of mentoring in the training of students in surgical care is a guarantee for improving the quality of education. Students need support and encouragement for professional realization in the field of surgical care. Attracting and retaining young people in the field of surgical care should start during university studies. The motivation for the choice of surgical care must be maintained on the basis of good theoretical and practical training. It is necessary to develop projects in which to involve students, setting them individual tasks for mastering the standard models developed and applicable in surgical care.
