Abstract

A basic principle of any health care system is the provision of safe medical care for the entire population, which is a serious challenge and puts to the test medical and health care facilities, especially those with inpatient care. The modern concept of nosocomial infections is infections related to medical care, which is wider and more accurately reflects their nature, origin and course. Healthcare - associated infections (HAIs) are one of the most common and undesirable causes of accidents in the providing of medical care. They are of particular importance due to the fact that their adverse effects affect many entities - patients, healthcare professionals and medical institutions. This type of complication, occurring in medical practice at all levels, is a problem of infectious pathology and seriously affects mostly hospitalized patients. They cover a specific group of infections with a special epidemiology, which often distinguishes significantly from that of classical infections dominating for the same period. They are caused by a variety of microflora - from species with pronounced pathogenic properties to representatives of their own, resident bacterial flora, including external microorganisms in the hospital environment. These characteristics of the HAIs give grounds to consider them as a priority in the strategic documents related to the development and management of hospitals and are part of the problems underlying a number of national health policy consensus. This paper discusses data related to the study of the frequency of HAIs with their etiological and clinical structure in a medical institution of the University Hospital for Active Treatment (UHAT) for the pre-pandemic period 2014-2018. Data from the automated information system of the National Center for Public Health and Analysis (NCPHA), reports for registered HAIs of the Regional Health Inspectorate (RHI) - Ruse and own observations. The documentary method is mainly used, as the data are processed statistically through mathematical and graphical analysis.
