PILOT STUDY: ADAPTATION AND VALIDATION OF A TOOL FOR ASSESSING CLINICAL REASONING IN NURSING STUDENTS

This study aims to adapt a clinical reasoning scale, initially designed for nurses, to cater to the specific needs of second and fourth-year nursing students. The primary objective is to create an effective tool for evaluating and enhancing the clinical reasoning abilities of these students as they prepare for their future roles in healthcare practice. The methodology involves three key steps. Firstly, the translation of the scale into Bulgarian was conducted, ensuring a suitable language context for the target group. Secondly, an expert panel, comprising healthcare professionals and educators, was formed to assess the accuracy of the translation and appropriateness of the scale. Lastly, a pilot study was carried out with randomly selected nursing students from the second and fourth academic years, using a questionnaire based on the adapted scale. Results: Insights from the pilot study provided valuable information about the adapted instrument. Findings indicated a positive reception among students regarding the clarity and comprehensibility of the questionnaire. Participants viewed the tool as highly clear and easy to understand, essential qualities ensuring result reliability and effective student response. Conclusion: In conclusion, the adapted clinical reasoning questionnaire for nurses proves to be a suitable instrument for evaluating the skills and competencies of nursing students. Its potential applicability in measuring desired aspects of clinical reasoning, as highlighted by the positive feedback from the pilot study, provides valuable insights into the competencies of nursing students in this crucial area. The prospective use of this adapted tool in future scientific research, educational programs, and assessments of professional development contributes to the sustainable improvement of the quality of preparation for future nursing professionals.
