Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to present a comparative analysis of chest mobility of users of the Nursing
Home "Podgorica" as a result of conducting a physiotherapeutic program of breathing exercises in the period from
July 24, 2023. until 10.11.2023. and in the period from February 13, 2024. until August 13, 2024. .
Methodology: In the Nursing Home "Podgorica" in the period from July 24,2023. until November 10, 2023, an
average of 18 users performed daily breathing exercises (in a sitting and standing position) with physiotherapists.
The first measurement of the "inspiration-expiration" ratio in five randomly selected users was performed on August
7, 2023, while the second measurement was performed on November 7, 2023. The average age of female users was
77.67 years, and 82.56 years for male users. The average age of users of both sexes was 80.11 years.
In the Nursing Home "Podgorica" in the period from February 13, 2024. until August 13, 2024, an average of 34
users performed daily breathing exercises (in a sitting and standing position) with physiotherapists. The first
measurement of the "inspiration-expiration" ratio of nineteen randomly selected users was performed on February
13, 2024, while the second measurement was performed on August 13, 2024. The average age of female users was
79.02 years, and 84.14 years for male users. The average age of users of both sexes was 80.87 years.
Results: In a three-month period measurement of the "inspiration-expiration" ratio was performed in five randomly
selected users, 3 (60%) women and 2 (40%) men. The difference between the second and first measurement was an
average of 1.1 cm in favor of an increased "inspiration-expiration" ratio, which indicates that the user's chest volume
increased by that much on average after three months of performing breathing exercises with physiotherapists.
In a six-month period measurement of the "inspiration-expiration" ratio was performed in nineteen randomly
selected users, 12 (63.1%) women and 7 (36.9%) men. The difference between the second and first measurement
was an average of 1.3 cm in favor of an increased "inspiration-expiration" ratio, which indicates that the user's chest
volume increased by that much on average after six months of performing breathing exercises with physiotherapists.
Conclusions: Breathing exercises (in a sitting and standing position) with physiotherapists are carried out for a
maximum of 30 minutes, which includes preparation for performing mobility-flexibility-coordination exercises,
positioning of the user, correcting the user during the exercise, application of various props, taking into account the
type, intensity, number of repetitions and user rest.
