Abstract

Preventive healthcare should not be seen as standard disease prevention. Under this concept are included
a wide range of activities and interventions aimed at minimizing the risk of disease, early detection and promotion of
a healthy lifestyle. It includes conducting regular preventive examinations, vaccinations, health education, health
promotion and changes in lifestyle, diet and physical activity.By focusing on these areas, preventive healthcare
seeks to maintain an optimal level of health, thereby increasing people's longevity and quality of life and reducing
the overall burden on the healthcare system. In the process of their studies, nursing students have the opportunity to
form competence for the implementation of preventive health care and health promotion. The study programs are
developed on the basis of Uniform State Requirements meeting the requirements of the European Union. The
acquired volume of theoretical knowledge and practical skills allow nursing students to work in various sectors of
the healthcare system, including disease prevention. The aimof the present study is to determine the self-assessment
of nursing students regarding their level of competence for disease prevention, based on theoretical and practical
training in the training process.Materials and methods:In the period April-May 2024, an anonymous survey was
conducted with 98 students from the II, III and IV year, studying in the Nursing specialty of Trakia University,
Faculty of Medicine - Stara Zagora. Results and extracts:The majority of all surveyed students (81.5%) gave a
relatively high self-assessment regarding their knowledge and skills in making presentations related to the
prevention of various diseases.4th year students have a higher self-esteem, the majority of them categorically state
that they feel prepared. Almost all respondents (97.9%) shared that during their studies at the university they
developed presentations, essays and brochures aimed at disease prevention. Not a small percentage of the surveyed
students (62.6%) believe that part of the duties of nurses are related to the promotion of health and the prevention of
various diseases among the population.Slightly more than half (55%) believe that the group of socially significant
diseases can be prevented by educating patients to prevent their development. Over 80% state their definite desire,
would participate and feel sufficiently well prepared to take part in a disease prevention campaign.
